Chinese guy, speaking English in nine accents, becomes a cyber star

Zhang Xu, a guy from northeast China’s Dalian City has recently become an Internet star. A video clip featuring Zhang Xu imitating English accents of 9 different countries including Japan, South Korea, Britain, India, France, Italy, the United States, Russia, and China soon became a hit on the Chinese video sharing website Youku and has been widely forwarded in different websites. Zhang has thus gained the nickname “Dongbei Yingyu Ge” (literally, northeast China’s English Brother).
In the 7 minutes’ video, Zhang Xu started with: “Hello, everyone, I am a young guy from Northeast China. Today I’m going to imitate how different foreigners introduce their countries in English. I hope you will like it.”
“I never thought this video would be so popular online,” said Zhang Xu. “People from different countries have different language characteristics, expressions, and accents. I am under a lot of pressure to do it well.”
Zhang Xu was an English major. He now works for a foreign company in Dalian. He and his colleagues are responsible for orders around the world and often deal with customers in different countries, so he consulted his colleagues a lot about linguistic characteristics of different countries before making the video.
“Every episode was recorded over 10 times, and it took me three months to complete it.” said Zhang Xu.
