A Series of Chinese Language Teachers Workshops Successfully Held at CIUC

The Confucius Institute at the University of Canterbury (CIUC) has hosted a series of Chinese language teachers workshops on New Zealand’s South Island since the beginning of 2012. The first phase of the workshops consists of three lectures focusing on Chinese phonetics and phonology. The lectures started from Mar. 28th to late May, and they were presented by Prof. Li Licheng, language instructor of CIUC.

The second phase of the workshops was co-organized by CIUC and ILEP at the CIUC Resource Centre of Christchurch Polytechnic Institute of Technology (CPIT) on Aug. 11st. Ms Wang Yu, National Chinese language Adviser in New Zealand was the lecturer for the first lecture, whose theme was “Introduction to the Intercultural Communicative Language Teaching (iCLT)”. In order to provide a clear picture of iCLT, the teachers present were divided into groups to project teaching plans according to the concepts of iCLT. In addition, teachers brought forward difficulties and problems occurring in their daily teaching. After warm discussion, some problems were well solved. The workshop lasted from 9:00am to 4:30pm.

So far over 50 participants from local schools and institutions have attended these workshops. Many teachers agree that this kind of training is beneficial for both teachers and schools in developing Chinese teaching and learning in the local areas. As is planned, more seminars on Chinese characters, vocabulary and grammars will be offered by the Confucius Institute of CIUC during the second half of 2012.
