The Second International Chinese Teachers' Development Forum Held in Beijing

The Second International Chinese Teachers' Development Forum held by Central Radio and TV University (CRTVU) opened at the new building of CRTVU in Beijing on July 20, 2012. The forum lasted two days. Teachers who specialize in teaching foreigners Chinese and experts from publishing houses from the Chinese mainland, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore, Malaysia, South Korea, the United States, and the UK attended the forum.


 

Liang Xiaoqing, Director of the Chinese Language Center at CRTVU, hosted the event's opening ceremony. Ruan Zhiyong, Party Chief of CRTVU, gave a speech at the opening ceremony. He first reviewed the history and development of the teaching of Chinese at the CRTVU from editing and publishing multimedia teaching resources and issuing them to more than 30 countries and regions to building the world's first web-based Confucius Institute to MyEChinese, a Chinese distance-learning system. CRTVU has made good use of its advantages such as distance learning and modern information technology. Meanwhile, Ruan Zhiyong also introduced to the experts and scholars internationalization, one of the university's key development methods for teaching foreigners Chinese. He said, "CRTVU has made internationalization one of its five key development methods by adopting the successful experiences of other international countries, exploring international development, cooperating with other international organizations, universities and institutions in education communication and collaboration, enhancing the university's international influence, competitiveness and attraction, and accelerating the pace of Chinese culture entering the world arena. Therefore, it's one of our important jobs in the future to develop international Chinese teaching by means of distance education and cooperate with the Confucius Institute headquarters to develop the institute worldwide."

 

Xu Shiqian from the Overseas Chinese Affairs Office of the State Council gave a brief introduction to Chinese teachers' development and sending teachers to foreign countries. Ge Zhenjing from the Ministry of Education emphasized that it was the most important basic work to build a professional international corps of Chinese teachers to ensure and enhance the promotion of the Chinese around the world.


 

Li Fujia, Vice Director of the Chinese Language Center at CRTVU, recalled the achievements "the First International Chinese Teachers' Development Forum" had made. She said, "By the end of the first forum, we received 86 papers. According to the expert committee that we specifically organized for overseeing the papers, 37 papers will be adopted for the final selected papers, which will be published by Beijing Language and Culture University and CRTVU jointly in September or October." Li Fujia also introduced the services and features that the forum provided. She added, "Thanks to the successful experience of the first forum, we will continue with such the notion of opening up, communicating and cooperating, and providing a larger communication platform for researchers and teachers."

 

To make the forum more academic, CRTVU as its host set up a expert committee and issued letters of appointment to the following experts: Professor Xu Ziliang from East China Normal University, Professor Wei Hong from Yunnan Normal University, Professor Jiang Liping from Beijing Language and Culture University (BLCU), Professor Zhang Xinsheng from University of London, Professor Zhang Ying from Peking University, Professor Cui Yonghua from BLCU, Jiang Mingbao, former vice director of Hanban and professor at BLCU, Professor Ding Anqi from Beijing Foreign Studies University, Professor Zhu Ruiping from Beijing Normal University, Professor Zhang Jianmin from East China Normal University, and Professor Zhou Xiaobing from Sun Yat-sen University. The above professors have contributed to the forum in terms of holding the forum, examining papers and performing academic research.


After the opening ceremony, experts engaged in sometimes heated discussions about the standards, means and technologies of international Chinese teachers' developments, curriculums, and teaching materials as well as the make-up of international Chinese teachers.


 

Professor He Kekang from Beijing Normal University, Zhao Shouhui from Nanyang Technological University, Xu Ziliang from East China Normal University, Wei Hong from Yunnan Normal University, Jiang Liping from BLCU, and Zhang Xinsheng from the University of London gave keynote speeches from different perspectives on the first day of the forum.


 

During the discussions that took place during the sub-forums, 58 scholars, teachers and graduates shared their opinions on topics, including standards and professional development, means and technologies for international Chinese teachers' development, curriculum and teaching materials. There was enough time for participants to exchange their views.

 


The forum's closing ceremony was held as a roundtable discussion. Participants gathered to debate hot topics that were not discussed thoroughly enough during the sub-forums and expressed their ideas individually. After a few students who had recently graduated as well as graduate students raised questions and gave their opinions, the focus of the discussion shifted to "conflicts concerning the provision of and need for international Chinese teachers." At the end of the forum Zhang Shaogang, Vice Party Chief of CRTVU, gave a concluding speech.

 


The First International Chinese Teachers' Development Forum was held in 2011. Experts and teachers who teach foreigners Chinese and come from more than 70 domestic and foreign universities joined the event and exchanged their opinions on teacher career development under the new circumstances.
