Students of GDUFS Shine Brilliantly at APEC Summit


At the APEC Summit, from September 30th to October 7th, CHEN Qiong, a graduate student of the Translation Faculty of our school, took part in the 2013 APEC economic leaders summit and other related activities with Chinese leaders, as an officially invited representative of China Youth.

On October 1st, the 2013 APEC Youth Summit was held at the Hyatt Hotel, Yogyakarta, Indonesia, gathering representative members of APEC and as well as many famous professors and experts. Centered on seven topics, the meeting discussed issues of the trans-pacific partnership agreement, food safety, trade facilitation, ASEAN-APEC relationship, energy safety, administration of disasters, small and medium-sized enterprises and more. The Chinese representative group that included CHEN Qiong set forward suggestions about food safety, which will be delivered to the chairman of 2013 APEC Ministers` Meeting.
On October 2nd, the youth representative group went to Bali and took part in the three-day 2013 APEC ¡°Incredible Week? As it happened to be a ¡°pre-2013 APEC SOM meeting? CHEN Qiong had the opportunity to be received by senior officials of many countries.
 

At the meeting, CHEN Qiong described the context of the group policy thesis, and asked Gita, Indonesian Minister of Trade Department, some questions about the relationship between China and Indonesia , which received Gita¡¯s effective reply.

During October 7th-APEC Summit, Ms. CHEN seized the opportunity to put forward questions about consumption taxes and the reform of the economic structure to the President of Japan, Shinzo Abe and others about the construction of human capital in his country to Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak. After the meeting, Ms. CHEN was praised by many entrepreneurs in attendance saying that she perfectly represented the mien modern Chinese university students should have.
 

In May, Ms. CHEN participated in the 2013 Model APEC Competition of GDUFS .She was successfully promoted to the final competition of the Guangzhou part and won first prize. In July, Ms. CHEN went on to Beijing to take part in the2013 MODEL APEC Competition of China getting very good marks, attaining the qualification to accompany China`s leaders attending the 2013 APEC Economic Leaders' Meeting and related activities.

CHEN Qiong said that both the preparation effort needed to gain the privilege of attending the Conference and the rewards were considerable. Firstly, she could closely appreciate the mien of leaders in political and commercial fields; Secondly, she made many good friends; Thirdly, she broadened her horizons; and last but not least, she learnt much more about social etiquette of such high-level meeting. Chen stated that she thought university students shouldn't bury themselves so deeply in books but rather get more contact with the outside world. Only by getting such contact and obtaining the right knowledge of the outside world did she feel they could adjust their goals and the emphasis of their studies and then put the knowledge into practice. The 2014 APEC Summit will be held in China, CHEN Qiong appealed to university students to make full use of the platform of MODEL APEC, take an active part in MODEL APEC Competitions and volunteer programs organized by APEC Commitee, know more about APEC, practice their abilities and widen their views.

Participating in another part of the APEC Summit, an excellent graduate of our University, Ms. LUO Jingying , accompanied PENG Liyuan as a translator attending activities organized by Indonesia President Suzy Rove, which were prepared for APEC economy¡¯s leaders.


Ms. LUO is a graduate of Indonesian language study, from class of 2008 Faculty of Eastern Language and Culture of GDUFS. In 2012, she was selected to study at the Indonesia University by the National Studying Abroad Foundation. When studying abroad, she helped present and organize The Rise of China International Seminar at Indonesia University, and took part in the Indonesian visit of KAKT member LI Changchun`s lecture by Chinese Ambassador to Indonesia, LIU Jianchao, as well as in other activities. Additionally, she took an active part in numerous academic and cultural communication activities held by the Chinese Embassy in Indonesia and at Indonesia University and fortunately became a representative of Chinese overseas students, accepting the invitation to be interviewed by CCTV reporters in Indonesia and by Metro-TV .

In addition, a 2003 GDUFS graduate student now attending the China Foreign Affairs University, LIU Churan , also attended the 2013 Bali APEC meeting and had informal communication with leaders from many countries, senior government officials and leaders representing various enterprises , attending as a representative of China Youth at the 2013 MODEL APEC meeting.

At the Model APEC Meeting, LIU Churan delivered a report on the topic of food safety and had the opportunity for a face-to-face talk with ministers and senior officials of the economic entities. According to the authorities, Liu had a well-developed statistical report-showing excellent logic and that was clear worded, and that was also well received.
