ICB Debate Competition has started
On October 13th, the preliminary contest of the ICB debate competition, which was organized by the Study and Practice Department, was successfully held in teaching buildings 1 and 2 as well as the computer center.
Fifteen minutes before the competition started, the debaters were getting ready for the competition in an atmosphere filled with nervousness and excitement. The competition in 1-307 was between UCD131 and UCD135. The competitors concentrated on searching, discussing and organizing materials during this quarter of an hour, before the two sides stated their opinions. The debaters expressed their key ideas logically, addressing the topic of whether a part-time job is good for college students or not. Once the arguments were stated and the free debating began, the debaters on the positive side gave many examples and talked about their experience of part-time jobs, however, their opponents strongly dismissed these ideas and asked targeted questions. They discussed the advantages and disadvantages of part-time jobs for students and in the end, made concise summaries of their arguments.
After a deep discussion, the judges marked each side based on their language, logic, contentious ability and overall skill to assess which side would get more marks and win the contest. Meanwhile, they also pointed out weaknesses in each side’s arguments and gave them some advice about public speaking. The audience showed their appreciation and The Vice Minister of the Study and Practice Department, Wen Xin, looked forward to further debates.
In the preliminary contest, UCD135, UCD133, UCD137, UK101 was promoted to the following match.
