2013 Short-term Chinese Programs Carried out Successfully

    The Summing-up Meeting of Short-term Chinese Language and Culture Program was held on October 30. Ms. Zhao Xiaofeng, the vice dean of the School of International Education of HUST, made a summary, and awarded all the assistant interns the internship certificates. 9 of them were honored as “Excellent Program Assistants”. Program director Mr. Yin Xinlin, Mr. Ai Xiao and Ms. Yan Wei from the School of International Education of HUST also participated in the meeting. 
    It is known that the Short-term Chinese Language and Culture Program is a brand project created by Huazhong University of Science and Technology(HUST) together with famous abroad universities, which is aimed at attracting international students come to HUST to learn Chinese language as well as experience Chinese culture. By various activities like language classes, lectures, recreational sports and activities, visit of enterprises, cultural tours, seminars, public benefit activities and academic exchange, the participants can have a better understanding of China. Thus, friendly exchanges of international and Chinese students will be promoted. 
    By now, Short-term Chinese Language and Culture Program of 2013 has already involved around 200 students of 9 well-known universities from the Great Britain, France, Australia, New Zealand, Netherland, Mongolia and Indonesia. During their stay in Wuhan, the international students not only improved their Chinese speaking skills, but also had a comprehensive experience of Chinese culture. Firstly, the participants were impressed by traditional cultural activities such as paper- cutting, Chinese calligraphy, Tai Ji and Pecking Opera facial makeup. Secondly, delicious local food and beautiful scenery spots of Wuhan fascinated the visitors. Places such as Yellow Crane Tower, Hubu Lane, Wuhan river beach, Hubei Provincial Museum and Art Gallery caught their eyes. Thirdly, the students made visit to Wuhan National Laboratory for Optoelectronics, State Key Laboratory of Coal Combustion, Tongji Medical College and China-EU Institute for Renewable Energy at HUST, where scientific research ability of HUST are showcased. Moreover, the international students served as volunteers in middle school or primary school. They also took part in the football league match. Most of the participators expressed their wish to come to HUST or Wuhan again in the future for further study. 
    It is the first time for the program to recruit assistant interns all over the campus, and the reaction was quite strong. Out of the fierce competition, including resume selection and interview in English language, 24 of the applicants made into the final team of teaching assistants and activity assistants. Besides these two kinds of assistants, in order to offer all-around help for the students, each group was also provided with Chinese language teachers, program managers, teaching supervisors as well as reporters. 
    It is reported that the Short-term Chinese Language and Culture program will have further development. The program will continue to serve as a wonderful bridge between Chinese and international students to know more about each other, and contribute to the development of HUST to gain a reputation of world first class university, which will do good for HUST to attract high-quality source of international students.
