Confucius Institute Scholarships at Xiamen University

 

 
Xiamen University (XMU), founded in 1921 by Tan Kah Kee, the late revered leader of the overseas Chinese community, was the first Chinese university founded by an overseas Chinese. XMU enjoys privileged support from both the national “211 Project” and the “985 Project”. XMU is recognized as a first-class national university with an international reputation as a centre of scholarly excellence, and ranks among the top 20 of the over 2,000 universities and colleges in China. XMU campuses are situated around the Xiamen Bay, opposite Taiwan across the sea, commanding a beautiful view of green hills and the blue sea. It boasts one of the most beautiful campuses in the world.
 
Xiamen University was one of the first institutions to develop overseas education, with the foundation of overseas correspondence education in the 1950s, followed by the recruitment of international students with Chinese government scholarships from 1981 onwards. In all, XMU has hosted over 20,000 overseas correspondence students and over 10,000 foreign students from more than 100 countries. XMU is among the first universities affiliated to Ministry of Education to accept Chinese Government Scholarship students and Confucius Scholarship students. The university has enrolled over 300 Confucius Institute Scholarship students since 2008.
 
1.      Confucius Institute Scholarships
In order to support the development of Confucius Institutes and promote the Chinese language and culture around the world, Confucius Institute Headquarters (Hanban) has launched the “Confucius Institute Scholarship” program to provide financial aid for students, scholars and Chinese language teachers worldwide to study towards a Master’s degree in Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages (MTCSOL) in Chinese universities, or study in such majors as Chinese Language and Literature, Chinese History and Chinese Philosophy.

Scholarship for One-Semester Students and One-Academic Year Students: Chinese Language and Literature, Chinese History, Chinese Philosophy, Traditional Chinese Medical Science, Chinese Music, Chinese Dance
Scholarship for Students of Master’s Degree in Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages (MTCSOL)
Scholarship for Students of One-Academic-Year + MTCSOL
2.      Confucius China Study Plan Scholarships
In order to foster deep understanding of China and the Chinese culture among young elites from around the world and prosper China studies, the Confucius Institute Headquarters (Hanban) has launched the “Confucius China Study Plan”. Xiamen University is one of the 14 Chinese host universities that are designated by Hanban.
 
The Plan consists of six subprograms, including the Sino-foreign Joint PhD Subprogram, the PhD in China Subprogram, the Young Sinologists Subprogram, the Youth Leaders’ Subprogram, the International Conference and Publishing Subsidy Subprogram. The majority of the financial support is provided in the form of grants for specific research and other projects in designated fields of Humanities and Social Sciences.
 
The subsidies include: in-China research fund, tuition, lodging and living stipends, library stipends, in-China health and accident insurance, as well as subsidies for attending academic conferences in related areas, round-trip international transportation, and other living and work subsidies provided by the Chinese and/or oversea universities hosting the program. The Headquarters will provide each approved candidate a subsidy of up to RMB 200,000 per year.
