Shanghai University Holds The Sixth International Conference on Nonlinear Mechanics

The Sixth International Conference on Nonlinear Mechanics (ICNM-VI) was held at the Baolong Grand Mercure Hotel Shanghai on 12-15th August, 2013. The meeting was approved by Shanghai Association for Science & Technology and Shanghai Municipal Government, organized by Shanghai Institute of Applied Mathematics and Mechanics and sponsored by International Union of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics, The Chinese Society of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics, Shanghai University and Science and Technology Commission of Shanghai Municipality. 130 outstanding papers were received and published by the proceeding. 17 special invited representatives from all over the world, 90 Professionals and more than 140 students attended this event.
The opening ceremony of ICNM-VI was held in Grand Mercure Baolong Hotel Shanghai Golden Hall grand in the morning of 12th August. The important guests who participated in the ceremony included the director of The Chinese Society of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics, the vice director of Chinese Society of Aeronautics and Astronautics Prof. Haiyan Hu, Party Secretary of Shanghai University Prof. Xinhui Yu, Dalian University of Technology Academician Wanxie Zhong, University of Science & Technology China Prof. Xiyun Lu who was awarded Cheung Kong scholars and National Outstanding Young Investigator Award, Director of Institute of Biomechanics and Medical Engineering Tsinghua University, Secretary General of The Chinese Society of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics Prof. Xiqiao Feng, Dean of the School of Civil Engineering and Mechanics Lanzhou University Prof. Youhe Zhou who was awarded Cheung Kong scholars, Prof. Yapu Zhao who was award National Outstanding Young Investigator Award and Hundred Talents Program. 11 overseas well-known professors who are Prof. J. Zhang from George Washington University, a member of National Academy of Engineering, Prof. W. K. Liu from Northwestern University, Prof. S. Zaleski from UPMC University, Prof. P. Podio-Guidugli from University of Roma TorVergata, and Prof. H. Altenbach from Otto-von-Guericke University Magdeburg, etc. Opening ceremony was chaired by the secretary general Prof. J. Zhang. At first, Academician Haiyan Hu He preceded his speech with welcome to the guests representing The Chinese Society of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics. Then Party Secretary of Shanghai University Prof. X. Yu gave a speech and congratulation to all conference attendants. Finally, Director of the Shanghai Institute of Applied Mathematics and Mechanics Prof. Z. Zhou introduced the preparation work for this meeting.
ICNM-VI invited six 45-minutes plenary lectures for presenting the latest results in nonlinear mechanics which were given in the two mornings of 12th August and 15th August. The reporters and the titles are listed as follows:
1. Haiyan Hu, Dynamics of Large Deployable Space Structures via Absolute Coordinate Descriptions.
2. Wing Kam Liu, Design of Material Systems: Mathematics and Physics of the Archetype-Genome Exemplar.
3. Paolo Podio-Guidugli, Heat Propagation, Diffusive and Wavy.
4. Holm Altenbach, Micro-macro Analysis of Creep and Damage Behavior of Multi-pass welds.
5. Ken P. Chong, Some New Developments in Non-Linear Solid Mechanics.
6. Stéphane Zaleski, Direct Numerical Simulation of Multiphase Flows with Volume of Fluid Methods.
ICNM-VI also invited 10 40-minutes keynote lectures for stimulating wider academic exchange for experts in the related fields all over the world which were given in the afternoon of 12th August.
The group presentations were divided into four branch fields that were held in the halls of Hui Zhi, Hui Ya, Hui Rui and Hui Li and in good progress in 13-14th August. The contents involved the traffic flow, nano- and micro-mechanics, Multi-scale and multi-physics modeling, Defects, phase transitions and microstructure evolution in materials and nonlinear deformation, Structural dynamics and structure-fluid interactions, Complex fluid flow and nonlinear waves, Turbulence and nonlinear stability, Nonlinear dynamics, Interface mechanics and free boundary problems, Biomechanics, Experimental mechanics and experimental techniques, and Engineering application and miscellaneous. The most oral presentations were interesting and reflected the current research hotspot and development trends of the nonlinear mechanics. The presenters also had very heated discussions and exchanged their ideas. Especially, the groups of the Traffic Flow, Nano- & Micro-Mechanics and Turblence had excelled in presentation.
At noon on 15th August, The Sixth International Conference on Nonlinear Mechanics (ICNM-VI) came to close. The closing ceremony was chaired by Prof. Z. Zhou. Prof. H. Altenbach, Prof. J. Zhang, Prof. R. Kienzler made closing remarks. A major feature of this conference was that more and more young researchers joined in the conference and their critical thoughts and insights exhibited vigor and vitality of the nonlinear mechanics. This conference also awarded the best organization and the best presentation, Prof. T. Zhang and Dr. D. Ming delivered expressed their thoughts and gratitude representing the winners. Eventually the chairman Prof. Zhewei Zhou announced that the conference had a complete success.
