Dalian University of Technology held the 1st International Cultural Festival

With the clear sky and the refreshing air, autumn is a golden season full of blossom and beauty. October 19, 2013 saw the enthusiastic figures and the laughing cheers of young people with different colors by the Ling River. The "International Cultural Festival" decorated the campus into a splendid global village, creating an immersive exotic atmosphere.

With a tour map in hand and traveling on the “style street”, it seemed that the visitors were traveling around the whole world as the exotic came to their eyes. With the floating aroma of food, the “Continental Style Street” was highly welcomed. Visitors could experience snacks from all over the world, appreciate all styles of costumes and exotic dances and also enjoy to their hearts’ content the unique charm from different cultures.

The Japanese booth attracted many visitors because the international students used seafood as their cooking material and prepared food which was slightly salty, slightly sour and sometimes slightly spicy. Balls were heart-shaped with cheese wrapped inside it. The seafood sauce added some delicious flavor to the rice cakes whose grains were so full. Chicken was crisp outside and tender inside. When dipped in the special sauce, it was really terrific. There were more kinds of food in the Korean pavilion, such as currently fried leek pie, kimchi fried rice, fried rice cakes, as well as delicious seaweed soup. Korean boys with warm smiles sang the song “three bears” to attract visitors.

In the Muslim section, Saudi students, dressed in white and wearing a scarf, introduced the Saudi specialties and coffee with unique taste. Before the Iranian booth, lovely girls introduced their well-made sweet “golden rice” to the visitors. Some Pakistanis made specialties with their own rice and dried fruit, taught visitors to speak their country’s language on the spot and also showed the Pakistani coins, clothes and music to the visitors. Some Sudanese, dressed in white, recommended to the visitors their coffee with special flavor.

The International Cultural Festival also opened up three interactive areas for students to participate. In the Japanese Pavilion, visitors can get their favorite gifts by hitting the corresponding color bottles or shooting the targets. In the Pakistani Pavilion, the “magician” again and again guessed exactly what color was in a visitor’s hand. Also there was the Fun Passport. If visitors could get a seal from each section, they could turn the dial and get their prizes.

After the opening ceremony, the giant cake was provided for visitors free of charge. Those who expected to have a taste of the delicious food lined themselves up in front of the distribution stand. School leaders and guests picked up knives and forks, personally cut the cake for the students. The master who made the cake told the writer that they prepared the cake from 3:00 am until then. Pan Guipei, a freshman from the Faculty of Chemical Engineering and Environmental life, said with excitement that “This festival is so lively, so impressive and so fun” as he enjoyed the fragrance of the cake with green tea flavor. Zhang Meng, who was responsible for the giant cake plan, said that everyone in DUT would remember this day as it was so special and meaningful. It was also the beginning of more exciting programs which would be presented at the future International Cultural Festivals.

Traditional Operas, National Cultures
Melodious sound of Erhu and Zhongruan floated from the center stage. The players were teachers and students from the Peking Opera Troupe. From their skillful fingers came the beautiful melody. With the exotic atmosphere, this Chinese style seemed particularly fresh and charming.

''They played really well”, Wang Jiayu, a student from the Physics said, “The Peking opera is the quintessence of our country and today’s International Cultural Festival is really a good opportunity to promote the Chinese culture as it brings together students from dozens of countries.” The charm of the opera attracted a growing number of students and many filmed the entire process with their cell phones.

Han-style Clothes Show
With the rhythmic music, international friends of different complexion came from both sides of the T stage. They had something in common—dressed in Chinese clothes—Han-style, which drew a large number of visitors’ attention. The international students with high nose and blue eyes and wearing the colorful Chinese costumes were really attractive. Some of them were dressed in cheongsam and Chinese tunic suit, some were dressed in costumes, wearing pony hair, and some Vietnamese students were even dressed in costumes, just like the four figures from the Journey to the West, which drew the audience to a roaring laughter.

Chen Huirong, a student from Vietnam and majoring in the International Economics and Trade in our university, has come to China for more than a year. He pointed to a photo, introducing his hometown, Vietnam’s capital Hanoi. He also briefed the origin of “Hoan Kiem Lake” to the reporter. The legend of Hoan Liem Lake and the turtle is just a Vietnamese version of the “King Arthur Legend”.

''International Cultural Festival” will be better and better

''Shocked! Really shocked!” These are the words from the Japanese consul. He is an amiable old man and spoke highly of this festival. He invited the writer to have a taste of the Japanese rice balls, “the taste is very authentic!”

In the background of the pavilion, the writer saw Mr. Alexander, Belarusian Ambassador to China, standing there. He was invited and came from Beijing. Mr. Alexander thought the festival was quite distinctive with various activities and careful preparation. Especially at the food court, he had tasted many kinds of food which he had never seen before. He also believed that such activities should be more, which could not only increase the exchange between Chinese and foreign friends, but also help the Chinese culture to go to the world. Such festivals can play an active and incalculable role in promoting Chinese culture.

Volunteers in the Background
At the festival, volunteers wearing the costumes of Institute of International Education could be seen everywhere. They were quite busy, taking care of every detail of the cultural festival. Ji Rongjiao and Luo Yuqing, two volunteers said while wiping sweat that they had prepared the festival for more than a month and they worked all night long the night before the festival. The successful holding of this event made their hard work worthwhile. And at the same time, they hoped that the university would give more support to this festival.

Li Diandian and Chen Qian, two students from the Kendo Club performed kendo for the students at the entrance. They were quite excited that our university could hold such a large-scale international exchange activity. The International Cultural Festival not only built a bridge of exchanges for the majority of students and the international students, but also provided a good platform for clubs so that students could have this rare opportunity to know the kendo culture.

The first International Cultural Festival came to a successful close with the sharing of delicious food and joy and also experiencing the exotic culture. In this golden October, with the fresh breeze and youthful vitality, this festival is the perfect integration of cultures. Here we are family whatever your complexion and wherever you come from.
