Zhejiang University’s Professor Appointed an International Chair Professor of Excellence

Recently, Professor Zhang Honggang of Department of Information Science and Electronic Engineering was appointed an International Chair Professor of Excellence by Université Européenne de Bretagne – European University of Brittany (UEB). The term of appointment starts from December 2012.
 
Université Européenne de Bretagne – European University of Brittany was established in March 2007. In April 2006, the French government initiated a project entitled as “Etablissement public de coopération scientifique (EPCS – Public Scientific Cooperation Institution” to maintain and strengthen the academic influence of French universities and national research institutions on the major field of basic research. UEB was established with the approval and funding of the project with a coalition of 23 universities and research institutions in Bretagne, France. Currently, there are 8,500 faculty and staff and 72,000 students at UEB.
 
Each year UEB selects and appoints an International Chair Professor of Excellence to lead its subordinate Excellence Center. So far five International Chair Professors of Excellence have been appointed from the U.S., Germany, Canada and Ukraine to head disciplines including oceanography, biological genetics, ecological environment science, photonics, microwave and etc. Professor Zhang Honggang is the first International Chair Professor of Excellence selected from the Asia-Pacific region. His research is mainly concerned with the basic theory and key technology in cognitive green communication network.
 
During his term at UEB, Prof. Zhang will collaborate with CominLabs (CominLabs Excellence Center, http://www.cominlabs.ueb.eu/) which is the only Excellence Center in information technology at UEB. Currently, there are a number of internationally renowned scholars in information, communication and network technology at CominLabs, including Professor Claude Berrou, the inventor of Turbo codes.
