Zhejiang University 2012 Marine Science and Technology Development Symposium Held in Zhoushan

 On the afternoon of December 24 and morning of December 25, members of Zhejiang University marine strategy research team and experts in marine-related disciplines had exchanges and discussions with officers in relevant departments of Zhoushan city on the research on marine science and technology development strategy, development of emerging marine industry of strategic significance, collaborative innovative development of East China Sea, and Zhairuoshan marine science and technology projects.
 
In February 2012, Zhejiang University marine strategy research projects commenced. Experts and professors from relevant fields made up 8 strategy research groups of different research areas, including ocean exploration and equipment engineering, marine delivery vehicles, marine energy engineering, marine biological resources engineering, marine ecology and environmental engineering, land and sea related engineering, marine politics and law, marine economy and culture and so on. The eight groups conducted investigations and research in their fields. In March, Zhejiang University, Zhoushan city and the Second Institute of Oceanography jointly set up “Intelligent East China Sea Collaborative Innovation Center” to explore the mode of collaborative innovation and support the development of marine industry, economy, culture and society of Zhoushan city and Zhejiang Province. Zhejiang University set aside special funds to support projects undertaken by Zhejiang University professors, including marine new energy power project, floating semi-submersible platform, marine remote sensing observation demonstration system, marine environment monitoring demonstration platform, and marine resources development demonstration platform and so on.
 
Zhejiang University President Yang Wei participated in the symposium. He said that international science circles attached much importance to cooperation in oceanography. We are faced with great opportunities and the priority is to our job well in understanding the areas of research we can conduct in oceanography, the aspects we can excel, the advantages of us being a comprehensive university, and the talents we can find in relevant fields. Yang hoped that working plans could be made in each of the above-mentioned aspects.
 
Directors of various projects reported the progress of their work. Since the establishment of Zhejiang University marine strategy research team, it has made more than 50 proposals on projects in relevant research fields based on investigation into and analysis of current research status and issues, national needs and regional development strategies, and university advantages in disciplines and talent. The team will further their study to provide advice for marine development strategy of Zhejiang University.
 
After the reports, Executive Vice-President Wu Zhaohui assigned tasks for the next phase of construction. He said that marine strategy research should cater to the future needs of Zhoushan and Zhejiang University. The construction of College of Oceanography should promote the development of Zhoushan and disciplines at Zhejiang University. We should rationalize the operation mechanism to build Zhairuoshan marine science and technology island into a nation-level demonstration platform and base in marine research.
 
Mayor Zhou Guohui of Zhoushan city, Vice-Chairman of Zhejiang University Development Committee Chen Zichen attended the symposium.
