Senegalese Woman Study Chinese Medicine

As global interest in China and its ancient history grows, more foreign students are coming to the country to learn about its culture. CCTV reporter Ma Chen meets a Senegalese woman who is studying Chinese medicine in Beijing.

In the gymnasium of the Beijing University of Chinese Medicine, students are training in Taijiquan, a Chinese martial art. Fall Mame Awa Ly is among them. The 22-year-old from Senegal is working on her bachelor's degree at the university.

Awa said, "Chinese are nice, they like foreigners. We haven't had big problems, but there are also huge cultural differences between China and Africa. Anyway, the more I learn about Chinese medicine, the more I like it."

Awa studied the Chinese language for a year before her interest in Chinese medicine compelled her to enroll at the university. She hopes to take her knowledge home to help her country.

She siad, "Chinese doctors went to Senegal. I heard of them, and it was great! They treated a lot of diseases over there, then I said to myself 'why not?. I can give it a try. I can always try, it will be a big change in my family, since nobody is working in this field in my family'."

This year, Awa studied research on so-called "cold diseases". She can now distinguish symptoms and recognize most of the plants utilized in drugs. She is also able to perform acupuncture. Her internship in a hospital will begin next year.

By the end of 2009, about 1400 foreign students were studying at the Beijing University of Chinese Medecine. The university offers a friendly environment where the students can combine theory and practice.
