Zhejiang University Developed Supramolecular Cross-linked Conjugated Polymer
Recently, the research team headed by Prof. Huang Feihe published a paper in Journal of The American Chemical Society. The first author of the paper is Ph.D. candidate Ji Xiaofan. The paper is entitled “A Supramolecular Cross-Linked Conjugated Polymer Network for Multiple Fluorescent Sensing”.
Ammonia, or ammonia gas with formula NH3, is a colorless gas soluble in water. It has a wide range of uses and is one of the world’s most productive inorganic compounds with more than 80 percent used to produce fertilizer. However, ammonia is corrosive and stimulating to skin tissues in contact, and will absorb the moisture in skin tissues, induce the denaturation of the tissues and the saponification of tissue fats, and destroy the cell membrane structure. With high solubility, ammonia is irritating and corrosive to animal and human upper respiratory tract, and can paralyze respiratory cilia and damage mucosal epithelial tissues. The short-term inhalation of large amount of ammonia will induce tears, sore throat, chest tightness, difficulty in breathing; excessive inhalation of ammonia may even be life-threatening by causing cardiac and respiratory arrest with the reflex of trigeminal nerve endings.
Funded by the National Natural Science Foundation, Foundation of the Central Universities Fundamental Research, and Zhejiang Province Outstanding Youth Science Fund, recently the research team headed by Prof. Huang Feihe developed a kind of supramolecular cross-linked conjugated polymer. A film of such substance can be made by spin-coating the solution on a glass slide. The exposure of such a film to ammonia leads to an increase of fluorescence, making it a good candidate for gas detection. The paper was published in Journal of The American Chemical Society (DOI: 10.1021/ja3108559, http://pubs.acs.org/doi/abs/10.1021/ja3108559). The first author Ji Xiaofan joined the research team in September 2010, and is mainly engaged in the supramolecular chemical and material research on crown ether.
