Annual Conference of Zhenjiang Pearl S. Buck Research Association Held in Jiangsu University

On December 27th 2012, the annual conference of Zhenjiang Pearl S. Buck Research Association was held at No.1 lecture hall of Conference Center in Jiangsu University. Mr. Qian Yongbo, honorary president of the Association, Ms. Xu Xiaoxia, President of the Association, Mr. Li Guozhong, President of Zhenjiang People's Political Consultative Conference, Ms. Miao Zimei, vice President of JU, Mr. Cai Wenjun, vice president of the Association, and some other leaders and representatives from relative departments in Zhenjiang and JU were present at the conference. Ms. Miao Zimei gave a welcome speech on behalf of JU and introduced the history and achievements of Pearl S. Buck research as well as the progress of JU in social science research. Ms. Xu Xiaoxia reported the Association’s work in 2012, and pointed out that one of the key tasks in 2013 is to build the brand for Peal. S Buck and help Overseas Education College (OEC) of JU to attract more oversea students. Before Ms. Xu Xiaoxia and Ms Miao Zimei inaugurated Pearl S. Buck Research Institute of JU, Mr. Li Guozhong emphasized that the establishment of the Research Institute was very significant for the development of the university and its collaboration with the local government.
 
Authorized by leaders of the university, School of Foreign Languages, School of Humanities and Law, Overseas Education College, Magazine House of JU, Publishing House of JU and other relative departments held a meeting early this month in order to establish Pearl S. Buck Research Institute of JU. Finally, an agreement was made that the Institute would be affiliated to School of Foreign Languages, with Professor Wu Qinghong from School of Foreign Languages being its president, professor Shi Huige from School of Humanities and Law and Rui Yueying, vice president of Publishing House of JU, being its vice presidents, associate professor, Mr. Li Xinchao (Charles, vice dean) from OEC being its secretary-general.At the annual conference of Zhenjiang Pearl S. Buck Research Association, Professor Wu Qinghong on behalf of Pearl S. Buck Research Institute of JU made a report entitled “A New Platform to Promote the Study of Pearl S. Buck”. She introduced the personnel structure and the scientific research level of the institute, emphasized the need to promote an interdisciplinary study of Pearl S. Buck, and mentioned some possible cultural activities which could be organized in and outside the campus, such as cultural exchanges of students and teachers both at home and abroad, lectures made by experts etc. She said that the Institute would try its best to form a good academic atmosphere and cooperate with Zhenjiang Pearl S. Buck Research Association to promote the local culture and help to expand foreign exchanges of Zhenjiang.
 
Since dozens of papers written by members from city institutions of culture, tourism, foreign affairs, publicity and universities were submitted to the conference, 9 were chosen to be read at the conference. Mr. Zhang Zhengxin from School of Humanities and Law introduced the outline of his report, Searching for Zhenjiang: Pearl. S Buck’s Hometown in China. Apart from analyzing Pearl’ S works from a literary angle, he also tried to reveal Pearl S. Buck research’s modern value by combining it with hot issues, like The development of contemporary culture, urban construction, the open strategy and so on, in a historical setting with Zhenjiang as her hometown. The fact that Mo Yan has won the Nobel Prize in literature leads to a big increase in the visiting amount to the memorial hall of Pearl S. Buck in Zhenjiang, because people are curious about the lady’s life, who won the Nobel Prize in Literature much earlier with a Chinese story. And the Pearl S. Buck Research Association will publish the book Searching for Zhenjiang: Pearl S. Buck’s Hometown in China next year to feed the readers.
 
In a word, the establishment of Pearl S. Buck Research Institute of JU is going to be another great event after the Commemoration of Pearl S. Buck’s 120th Birthday in June this year and the establishment of "International Cultural Exchange Practice Base" of JU in Pearl S. Buck Museum.
