New Year Celebration at Zhejiang University
On the evening of December 31, as the night fell, teachers and students came to Cultural Plaza on Zijingang campus, Yongqian Student Activity Center and Trade Union Activity Center on Yuquan campus, Li Zuoquan Activity Center on Zhijiang campus to celebrate the new year. The New Year Carnival was held simultaneously on these campuses to bid farewell to 2012 and greet the arrival of 2013.
Zhejiang University Party Secretary Jin Deshui, President Yang Wei, Executive Deputy Party Secretary Zou Xiaodong, Executive Vice-President Wu Zhaohui, Vice-President Zhang Tuqiao, Deputy Party Secretary Ren Shaobo, Vice-President Luo Weidong participated in the carnival on different campuses. They extended heartfelt thanks and New Year’s greetings to people around on behalf of Zhejiang University, and participated in the programs prepared by teachers and students.
On 7 pm, Jin Deshui, Yang Wei, Zou Xiaodong, Wu Zhaohui, Zhang Tuqiao came to Trade Union Activity Center on Yuquan campus and sang songs together with young faculty and staff. Party Secretary Jin Deshui sang a song entitled “May good people be free from mishaps all their lives” while young teacher Wang Lei and his fiancée distributed sweets to people present. A year ago, the young couple met each other at exactly the same place and their journey of love started.
In Yongqian Student Activity Center on Yuquan campus, President Yang Wei became the honored guest to draw prizes for participants. People cheered when Yang read the names of the lucky ones. The host proposed that President Yang sign his name on the prizes and boosted the festive atmosphere. The prize-winning students waved their trophies to show their happiness to the crowd.
About 20 student societies and teams performed in the New Year Carnival on Zijingang campus. Employees of the Logistics Group put on “Gangnam style” dance and won a lot of cheering from the crowd. Students showed their appreciation to their diligent work with enthusiasm. Students from Music Conservatory of Hangzhou Normal University and Zhejiang International Studies University contributed to the carnival with singing, dancing and greetings.
University leaders also made dumplings together with the crowd and cooked them for students. Later, they went to Danqing Gakuen and Lantian Gakuen to visit people there with greetings.
Party Secretary Jin Deshui reported the recent good news: the construction of Zhoushan campus, the set-up of Qiushi police station, the progress of housing project for young teachers… “In the past year, Zhejiang University increased investment on students by 50%. The investment will be increasing in the future, especially in international exchanges. Students can enjoy more chances.” He expressed his hope that students would make the most of the chances to develop their capabilities, interact with the society and gain personal growth. “This is the wealth of life.”
Right before the arrival of the New Year, President Yang Wei sent his greetings by singing “Happy New Year to you, happy New Year to you.” Five, four, three, two, one! The crowd counted down to the new year together.
Students of Zhejiang University broadcasting and TV station prepared a special video “To 2013” for the countdown. At the end of the video, they chanted the common aspirations of Zhejiang University students, “2013, let’s make a difference!”
