Wang Jian'an of Zhejiang University Honored with Norman Bethune Medal

Yesterday, on the National Health Conference 2013, 10 doctors were honored with “Norman Bethune Medal” in recognition of their contributions. Director of the Second Affiliated Hospital of Zhejiang University School of Medicine Wang Jian’an was on the list and became the first person to win this award in Zhejiang Province. “Norman Bethune Medal” is the highest national medical honor.

"I like being a doctor. When I became a student of the School of Medicine, my grandma repeated accented the importance of being kind to patients.” This was his award acceptance speech, rather straightforward.

30 years’ career in medicine, Wang always bears in mind the stories of patients, identifies with them in their pain, and takes their physical well-being as his goals.

One day more than a decade ago, a patient of acute myocardial infarction was sent to the emergency room. When Wang Jian’an read his medical records he was stunned. “He was only 25 years old, the best time of life. The disease was horrible and we must find a better way to treat heart disease.”

In 2002, researchers in Europe and America started study on stem cell transplantation to treat myocardial infarction. Wang Jian’an also started his study on stem cell transplantation to regenerate myocardia. He first proposed the way of hypoxic preconditioning of stem cells internationally which promoted stem cell survival rate from 30% to 60%. Domestically he was the first one to carry out autologous bone marrow stem cell transplantation to treat myocardial infarction and initiated a new approach…

In the same year, Wang Jian’an also first proposed myocardial infarction rescue within 90 minutes in Zhejiang Province. Medical professionals in the project developed programs and planted brackets for patients at the top speed. He also conducted the first hybrid surgery (thoracotomy interventional cardiac surgery) in Zhejiang Province and provided one-stop services for patients.

A principle that Wang often emphasizes is that details determine success or failure and patients’ life. In the Second Affiliated Hospital, many details can be noticed: disposable disinfectant solution is available in many places in hospital buildings;  warning boards like "watch your steps” are placed on every slope; volunteers in red vests are busy helping patients; visits are well arranged to avoid disturbance to patients…

On a winter morning, Wang Jian’an arrived at the hospital early and saw a long queue outside the outpatient building waiting for the door to be opened. Many patients stood on tiptoes to peer into the window to see the schedules of doctors… After that day, all the schedules and arrangements were posted up outside the building for patients’ convenience. “Some tiny changes can help relieve patients.”

Wang Jian’an works without a single day off duty, and each day he works more than 15 hours at the hospital. To ensure quick response, he would rent an apartment near the hospital wherever he goes. The registration fee for his appointment is never high. Each year he receives more than a thousand patients and conducts more than a thousand surgeries…

In a few days, Wang Jian’an will depart for Aksu, Xinjiang, to carry out surgeries for patients there who cannot enjoy high-quality medical conditions. Over the years he has been to every corner of Zhejiang Province to provide medical service for people in poverty-stricken areas. He is always patient to them, “I’m a doctor and my job is to sooth their pain.”

Wang Jian’an has a nice wish that every doctor working with the Second Affiliated Hospital can love the job and the good medical ethics will be passed down.
