English Medium Programs for International Students of CPU

1. Petroleum Engineering Undergraduate Program

The English medium program began in 2007, designed with a minimum class size of 15 students. The first group in-taken in 2007 was 17 overseas students. Both the class size and students levels are much bigger and better than that ever.

The educational object of the programs is to equip students in morality, intellectuality and physical fitness in order to meet the personnel needs of oil industries’ development. Students will be able to undertake petroleum engineering design, operation, production management, scientific development and applied research, etc. as well as know about Chinese society and culture when they graduate. Graduates should have solid foundation on math, physics, chemistry, mechanics, and geology and master basic Chinese. They should have the ability to design projects of oil and gas well drilling and producing, oil and gas field exploitation, to analyze and solve practical problems, to make technological improvement, scientific development and to process applied research.

The required degree courses include Elementary Chinese, A Survey of China, Advanced Math, Physics, Program Design Language, Chemistry, Oil Field Chemistry, Fluid Mechanics, Theory Mechanics, Material Mechanics, Oil Field Development Geology, Well-drilling Engineering, Oil Production Engineering, Reservoir Engineering etc. The Required credits are 141 of course book learning, 2.5 of experiments and 38 of practice. Only after they earn 181.5 required credits can they graduate and obtain Engineering Bachelor’s Degree. Students are required to write English graduation papers and offer Chinese abstract.

2. CUP-HWU MSc Reservioir Management Program

The Ministry of Education approved our university to carry out this joint program with Heriot-Watt University in 2004. The whole program is carried out and conducted in English.

There are three parts of this program: degree courses learning, Field Development Projec and Research Project-Paper. The 8 required degree courses include Petroleum Geosciences, Formation Evaluation, Reservoir Engineering, Well Test Analysis, Reservoir Simulation, Production Technology, Drilling Engineering and Project Economics. All courses lessons and reports are given by professional teachers from HWU and CUP. The Field Development Project and Research Project Paper are based on field materials, emphasis on improving students’ abilities of project design, software application, and English language level, improving students’ innovation ability. The courses schedule and assessment are enforced the standards of Heriot-Watt University.

The length of schooling is 1.5 year. Students will graduate with completion of the three parts of the program and obtain Master of Science in Petroleum Engineering awarded by Heriot-Watt University. The diploma and certificate are internationally recognized and authorized.
