Volunteer Visited Mentally Disabled Children

Bauhinia Primary School is a public special education school which accommodates hundreds of mentally disabled students. A short while after arrival, volunteers came up with games such as identifying animals, explanation of oracle bone inscriptions, understanding traffic lights, table tennis relay and etc.

Participants were students of the ninth grade. In their teens, these kids may only have an IQ of 7 or 8 year old. Their smiles and happiness seem the same as ordinary people; however, no one knows their inner world. They know that they are different, and they try to attend school and live in a normal way. 9 volunteers had one-on-one interactions with them. Starting from writing their own names, they gradually become closer with these kids.

After knowing each other, the game session started. The host explained some cartoon animals to the kids, and the kids excitedly raised their hands to answer questions. Their earnest, serious and aggressive behavior was just like that of volunteers in their childhood. The kids enjoyed the traffic light game very much and learned the basic traffic rules under the guidance of volunteers. The most exciting game was table tennis relay in which volunteers and kids were grouped to compete for awards. The kids laughed with triumph.

The world may be cruel to these kids. They don’t have a normal mind, but they can have their own life; they don’t have impressive qualifications and skills, but they can have their own happiness. They can feel darkness and sunshine. They know their imperfections, but still aspire to equality and love.

At the end of the event, volunteers and the kids took pictures together. Joy and excitement lit the faces up. Bless them!
