The New Rural Development Research Institute Inaugurated at Zhejiang University

On the morning of December 18, the new Rural Development Research Institute was inaugurated at Zhejiang University. Party Secretary and Dean of the newly established institute Jin Deshui, Zhou Guofu from CPPCC, Academician Gai Junyi and Chen Chunhong from the Ministry of Science and Technology jointly announced the inauguration of the institute.

The program of building new rural development research institute at colleges and universities is an important measure taken by the Ministry of Science and Technology and Ministry of Education to improve China’s new agricultural technology service system, and is also a strategic move in the medium- and long-term plan of science and technology and education. The aim is to give full play to universities’ capabilities of personnel training, scientific research, social services and cultural inheritance to build a new rural service model integrating agriculture, science and education. The plan has been implemented since the second half of 2011. 10 universities became the first batch of pilot universities to build new rural development research institute, among which Zhejiang University is the only comprehensive university.

In his speech, Jin Deshui accented the historic mission to provide rural service of Zhejiang University as a multi-disciplinary leading institution of higher learning. Zhejiang University will encourage inter-disciplinary and innovative research and serve the construction of new rural areas by integrating resources from Faculty of Agriculture, Life and Environment Sciences, Agricultural Technology Promotion Center, Agricultural Experiment Station, Zhejiang University China Rural Development Research Institute and so on. Zhejiang University will also strive to build the new institute into a platform of scientific and technological innovation, technical services and personnel training with international impact.

After the establishment of the new institute, it will improve the model of agricultural technology promotion, and investigate into the mechanisms and models of innovation in the new rural construction to address major theoretical issues and practical needs. It will also reform the mode of talent training to provide technical support for new rural construction.

The inauguration ceremony was presided over by Executive Deputy Party Secretary Zou Xiaodong. Vice-President Wu Ping, members of the advisory committee and academic committee and relevant teachers and students attended the ceremony.
