3rd All China Interpreting Contest, the Guangdong/Hainan Provincial Final

 

On November 17th, the 3rd All-China Interpreting Contest; the Guangdong/Hainan Provincial Final was held at the north campus of GUDFS. The contest, which was sponsored by the CTPC (China Translation and Publishing Corporation) and the Translators Association of China, and organized by the School of Interpreting and Translation Studies, GUDFS, gathered sixty outstanding contestants from twenty-two universities in Guangdong and Hainan provinces, all of whom were competing on the same stage. And, the top seven contestants are to be qualified for the South China Regional Finals to be held next month.    
 
The competition attracted high levels of attention among leaders and experts in the field and in the respective provinces. Mr. GAO Yunjian, Party Secretary of SITS and Ms. DU Huanjun, Deputy Party Secretary of SITS, were invited to present the contest and, with a panel of judges including professor FENG Zhilin, an expert in interpreting, Professor GAO Wenping of Sun Yat-Sen University, Professor DAI Canyu from Jinan University, Ms. DENG Yi from Xiamen University, Ms. FENG Man from Zhongnan University of Economics and Law and other judges from GDUFS constituted the panel of judges.
 
At the beginning of this contest, Mr. GAO, himself, opened the envelope where the test questions were placed. This was done on the spot to secure the fairness and equity of the process. Then sixty students and judges were divided into two groups and put in different places, all to push forward the contest at the same time.


Contestants interpreting 


 
The contest had two rounds, which were held in the morning and afternoon respectively. In the first round, the task was about interpreting the remarks of the Deputy Secretary General on Urbanization Issues inform the CUHK (Chinese University of Hong Kong). Responses were translated from English to Chinese and each contestant had three minutes and twenty seconds to listen to the passage and interpret it. Under this great pressure, contestants all tried their best to do well, which made the contest fierce and exciting. At the end of first round, twenty contestants with excellent marks were qualified to go on to the next round.
 
In the afternoon, 20 contestants continued as contestants with each, fighting valiantly on into the second round. In this round, the main task was to interpret a speech on the tourism industry from Chinese to English. Ms. DU Huanjun cut open the envelope containing the test questions. Then, after contestants went to the waiting room, the contest began. During this phase of the contest, contestants had no problems related to understanding of the speech or its meaning still, when interpreting, they encountered many problems such as the time limit, inaccurate information points and so on. In spite of the problems, each contestant showed their best to the audience. Generally speaking, with their abilities for quick thinking and flexible interpreting/translating strategies, all the contestants presented a wonderful performance. 
 
At the end of the contest, the expert FENG Zhilin offered some comments. Firstly, she congratulated contestants on their wonderful performances. Also, she pointed out some mistakes contestants made during the contest and suggested that contestants should learn to use pronouns that are used to replace the repeated Chinese nouns. Additionally she advised contestants not to use the first person when translating an official speech. What's more, she told contestants to pay more attention to the meaning that Chinese figures represent beyond only what figures may represent. Later, Professor GAO Wenping also encouraged contestants to work harder and  showed how contestants can cope with time problems such as simplifying sentences, grasping main points and handling sentences flexibly and so on.
 
After the final results came out, judges respectively awarded certificates to the prize winners and took pictures with them. The top seven contestants will attend the South China Regional Final next month.
