Chongqing Student Accepted into Deep Springs Cowboy College in California

Deep Springs College, an alternative college in California whose campus is on a 2,500 acre cattle ranch, has just accepted a new student… from Chongqing. The college offers a highly unusual university experience. Only accepting 13 students a year, it has a strict no drinking policy and students are required to do a minimum of 20 hours a week of farm work on the ranch. The boy’s admission into the college has created huge interest in the school, and it became one of the top ten trending topics on Weibo this week. Tuition, room and board are also free for the select few who get in.

The quality of education at Deep Springs rivals the top universities in the country, with guest lecturers from famous institutions such as Yale and Harvard. Many of the college’s alumni go on to study at Ivy League schools and have illustrious careers.

Peng, the lucky student, became interested in the school when he read about it in a magazine, and was determined to go. He fell in love with the place last year when he took a four day tour of the campus during which he got to butcher a pig.

Peng is the first mainlander to be accepted into the school. The school’s alumni include one boy from Taiwan and one from Hongkong.
