Yunnan University

Yunnan University is located in southwest China. It started as a privately-run institution called “University of the Eastern Land:” which began enrollment in April 1923. It is one of the earliest universities in southwest China. Over the past eight decades or more, the University has made brilliant accomplishments. Particularly during the president Xiong Qinglai (1937-1949), a cluster of distinguished scholars came to teach at the University. Then the University became prestigious at home and abroad, and in 1946, it was recognized by the Concise Encyclopedia Britannica as one of the fifteen world-renowned universities in China.

Over the past few years, Yunnan University has enjoyed the most favorable period of progress thanks to its reform practices. The University is working hard to make to make itself a leading figure with its own features by exploiting the advantages of the southwest frontier so as to make greater contribution to Yunnan. Well-facilitated, the University has a total area of more than 751 acre, of which the main campus occupies 93acre and the Chenggong campus, 658acre. Yunnan University comprises 17 schools, 7 institutes and 2 general teaching departments, offering 73 undergraduate programs in the domains of literature, history, philosophy, economics, management, law, science, engineering, and education. It enjoys 4 national key disciplines and 37 provincial key disciplines. Moreover, the University runs 53 PhD programs, and 5 professional degree programs (MPA, MBA, JM, ME and MTCSOL).

Yunnan University has practiced a comprehensive system of credit, embodying the idea of “Teaching for No Teaching and Learning for Creation”. It aims to cultivate versatile and creative talents with the spirit of truth, virtue, and innovation.

Yunnan University always puts a high premium on scientific research and the achievements abound. It has won several national awards because of the programs such as “Studies on the Chengjiang Fauna & the Cambrian Species Grand Explosion”, Study & Application on Meloidogyne spp. Fungus Biocontrol Resources, and China Petroleum Security Studies, and it has made breakthroughs in undertaking the Foundation for Outstanding Young Researchers, and Social Sciences Foundation.

Yunnan University，the only academic establishment of the Province that won the membership of “the Project 211”in China, cherishing the spirit of “Wisdom from Many and Justice for All” and the “investigations, justice, and Persistent Practice”, is working hard to improve its academic strengths so as to make greater contribution to country.
