Introduction of Hubei University of Technology

With a history of over 50 years, Hubei University of Technology (HBUT) is a provincial multi-discipline university, specializing in engineering. In 1984, Hubei Polytechnic University (the former name of Hubei University of Technology) was founded ---- as a result of the merge of the former Hubei Institute of Light Industry with the former Hubei Academy of Agricultural Machinery. HBUT, a key university which was founded and enjoys special attention from the Hubei Provincial Government, is recognized as “a leading and exemplary university in the Hubei Higher Education System”. In 1986, HBUT was authorized to grant Master’s Degrees. In 1998, HBUT successfully passed the undergraduate education appraisal conducted by the Ministry of Education, and in 2006 was assessed as “Level A” in the undergraduate teaching evaluation.
HBUT is now comprised of 14 schools (departments), offering 49 undergraduate programs, which cover different fields such as engineering, science, management, economics, and the liberal arts. Currently HBUT has an enrollment of over 18,000 full-time undergraduates and 1,350 full-time postgraduates. The university has 2,300 faculty members, of whom 1,100 are full-time tutors, with more than 170 full-time professors and 405 doctoral and master supervisors, 33 of whom are nominated on the name list of “National Elites Project”, “National Outstanding Elite Support Project”, “Hubei Provincial 111 Elite Project”, “Hubei Provincial New-Century High-level Elite Project”, and “Transcendent Discipline Leaders and Academic Backbones in Hubei”. A group of academics have been recruited from reputable overseas universities, and more than 100 influential scholars from world-renowned universities have been employed as part-time professors, who have formed over 10 provincial scientific and technological innovation teams as well as teaching teams.
HBUT upholds the principle of “build on quality, develop with elites, thrive on features, pursuant to law”, adhering to the aim of “bringing light industry into play, serving the regional economy, cultivating practical talents, and schooling with outstanding characteristics”. As a pilot project of the CDIO Engineering Education Mode launched by the Ministry of Education, HBUT has been aiming at training advanced competent professionals and endeavoring to adapt to the demand induced by economic growth and social progress. HBUT has been deepening the reform of outdated education style, discovering and designing scientific curriculums offering general knowledge and specialized skills, which are intended for training students to be both qualified in general and professional in specialized fields. HBUT graduates are remarkable for being practical, hardworking, loyal, promising and quick in learning, and therefore, they have been enjoying popularity among employers in the job market.
