Presidential Delegation from Taipei University of Technology Visits TU

On May 12-13, 2013, President Leehter Yao from Taipei University of Technology (Taipei Tech), Taiwan, China, led a delegation on a visit to Tianjin University (TU). TU Chairman of the University Council Liu Jianping and President Li Jiajun met with the guests respectively.

During the meeting, Chairman Liu expounded on the Tianjin Co-Innovation Center of Chemical Science and Engineering (COIC_CSE). He stated that both Taipei Tech and TU have similar disciplinary layouts as engineering universities, which span over one hundred years, and hoped that the two universities could further expand their cooperative areas.

President Li and President Yao recollected their meeting when President Li visited Taiwan in April of this year. President Yao discussed Technological University Paradigms in Taiwan and Taipei Tech’s latest ranking (Taipei Tech is the top university for "Model of Technical and Vocational Universities"). Both expressed hope in deepening their cooperation regarding staff exchange and joint research apart from student exchange programs. A discourse touching on co-establishment of a research center also took place.

Afterwards, the delegation visited the Key Laboratory of Smart Grid of Ministry of Education at the School of Electrical Engineering and Automation, as well as the TU History Museum, and was greatly impressed by TU’s research level, and history. The delegation also conferred with representatives from the Office of Science and Technology.

Taiwanese student Lin Peng, a sophomore from the TU School of Precision Instrument and Optoelectronics Engineering, attended the meeting as a TU Student Ambassador. Speaking of his study and life at TU, he said, “I have adapted well to my study and life at TU. All the students here study hard and this motivates me to study harder. Up to now, I have passed all my exams. And I will do better.”

Established in 1912, Taipei Tech is located in the Daan District of Taipei City. Its predecessor, the School of Industrial Instruction, was the first engineering school in Taiwan, China. In 2002, Taipei Tech and TU signed a Memorandum of Understanding. In 2010, the two universities signed a student exchange agreement, which was renewed in 2012. From 2010 to 2012, 10 TU students were sent to Taipei Tech for one term of study, while 8 students from Taipei Tech came for exchange at TU.
