WHU Wins Six National Scientific Awards

On January 8th, at the annual ceremony of the National Science and Technology Awards,Wuhan University received six awards, including two second prizes for Natural Science, two second prizes for Technological Invention, three second prizes for Sci-tech Progress and one International Science and Technology Cooperation Award for partner working in conjunction with Professor Joannes. E. Frencken.

Among the achievements made by WHU, the research of “regulatory mechanism of signal transduction in antiviral immunity” led by CAS fellow Professor Hongbing Shu won the second prize for Natural Science. In-depth research was carried out in the field of innate immunity of antiviral recognition, signal transduction and regulation, so that the knowledge of signal transduction and regulation mechanism of innate antiviral immunity was greatly improved. It helped a lot in the areas concernin ghost resistance to virus infection, virus-induced inflammatory response and self-immune system, research and development of medicines and vaccines for the purpose of anti-virus, anti-inflammatory andself-immune. “The significance of this project is to reveal the molecular mechanism of anti-virus immunity and inflammatory response and to help China get a better footing in the international competition of related fields."said Shu.

Professor Bo Zhong represented the team to accept the award in Beijing. He introduced that various diseases induced by virus infection can pose great threat to people’s life. “Our discovery reveals the physiological process of the host’s immediate recognition of virus and immune response and promotes the understanding of immunology. Some of these achievements have been written in textbooks.” He was greatly encouraged by the support for scientific research innovation and researchers provided by the party and government, “This award is not only our milestone for the past ten-year-research but also a footing stone for our future research.”

The project of “key technology and equipment of road pavement dynamic detection” led by professor Qingquan Li won the second prize for Technological Invention. The project is about the theory of subgrade and pavement performance, the principle and technology of high-speed nondestructive examination, and the development of major equipment of dynamic examination. Making a breakthrough of the automatic data-processing industry, the research has played a significant role in the development of domestic transportation career, and produced remarkable economic and social benefits.

In the aspect of partaking research, Professor Zhenfeng Shao et al from the State Key Laboratory of Information Engineering in Surveying, Mapping and Remote Sensing participated in the completion of “construction and application of geo-spatial framework technical system of national digital city”, Professor Shenghong Chen et al from the School of Water Resources and Hydropower Engineering participated in the completion of “characteristic evaluation and engineering utilization of Hydraulic rock mass”, Professor Lingkui Meng from School of Remote Sensing and Information Engineering participated in the completion of “key technology and application of big data driven multifactor hydrology survey and forecast”, and they all won the second prize for Progress in Science and Technology.

Working together with Professor Mingwen Fan from the School of Stomatology, Professor Joannes. E. Frencken from Radboud University won China International Science and Technology Cooperation Award. As the director of oral diagnosis and treatment plan of the WHO Cooperation Center, Prof. Frencken has been devoted to the research about preventive dentistry and mini-invasive dental science and the universal application of technologies like Atraumatic Restorative Treatment (ART) in China.

In total, this year’s National Science and Technology Awards were conferred on 295 achievements and 7 foreign science and technology experts. Among them, there are 1 first prize and 41 second prizes for Natural Science, 1 first prize and 65 second prizes for Technological Invention and 3 special award, 17 first prizes (3 innovative teams included) and 167 second prizes for Progress in Science and Technology. 7 foreign science and technology experts are honored with China International Science and Technology Cooperation Award.
