International Students visited the Yangtze Intangible Cultural Heritage Museum

With a new season coming, flowers bloom everywhere in the river city of Wuhan. In the alternating warmth and coldness, the continuous patter of raindrops and dancing shadow of trees of this season, international students from School of Mechanical Engineering and School of Electronic Information and Communications paid a visit to theYangtze Intangible Cultural Heritage Museum in the afternoon of April 22nd. This activity was organized by School of International Education, Huazhong University of Science and Technology. International students experienced modern and ancient Chinese culture, and refreshed themselves with both material civilization and spiritual civilization.

Everything must be practiced before being understood profoundly.School of International Education has been devoted to promoting culture exchange and introducing Chinese culture to the whole world. They have paid special attention to the cultural cultivation for international students from all over the world. International students have shown great enthusiasm on Chinese culture in and out of the daily classes. In order to deepen their knowledge of Chinese culture,School of International Education had made the major course <Introduction of China> combined with practice and theory.

Culture is the consequence of history development as well as the witness of history. Intangible cultural heritage, the ancient memory of human being, is beyond the limitation of time, space and countries. There are long history and culture and rich intangible cultural heritage resources along the Yangtze River Basin. After entering the museum, students firstly visited the wooden ship model “Zheng He treasure” under the lead of a tour guide. There were cabins and six white sails dancing in the wind on the bronzed base of the ship. Looking at its firm and pristine texture and listening to the introduction of the tour guide, we felt like we had gone back to the times six or seven hundred years ago when the strongest and greatest fleet of the world started its voyage nearly 100 years earlier than Columbus, Vasco da Gama and Magellan in Europe. We also felt like we were seeing Zheng He standing on the prow of the ship through winds and waves, not fearing any difficulty and introducing peace and advanced Chinese culture to Southeast Asia, south of South Asia and the east coast ofAfrica. He is the ambassador of peace and disseminator of Chinese and foreign culture.

Under the lead of the tour guide, we came to the opera exhibition area. Chu Opera, Han Opera, Huangmei Opera, Kunqu Opera, the Face Magic Show of SiChuen and other local operas were introduced, and other intangible cultural heritage folk music instruments like chimes, guqin, zither, Chinese lute, erhu, liuqin and so on were displayed. International students were inspired by the beautiful music played by the artists in the front of the Blooming Flowers Hall, and practiced these instruments by themselves. Students’ music techniques may not be as skillful as expertise musicians, but their hearts to be integrated with Chinese culture were so lovely and true.

After that, students visited a traditional Chinese painting of the Yangtze River, which mainly represents the human landscape, together with the natural landscape of the Yangtze valley. Heeding the path of the Yangtze River and driving the ship throughQinghai,Tibet,Sichuan,Yunnan,Chongqing,Hubei,Hunan,Jiangxi,Anhui,Jiangsu,Shanghai, all students were able to experience the Plateau culture, the Yi-liang culture, the Jing-Chu Culture, and the Wuyue culture, etc. without stepping outside.

In the end, all students felt this activity meaningful and unwilling to leave. Group photos were taken. Looking back to this exotic architecture which is fully occupied with the memory of Chinese culture, all students felt that isn’t it a new expression of Cultural exchange between China and the West? Just as the four letters ‘Chuan, Cheng, Shou, Wang’ shown on the exhibition wall, our younger generation inherit National Memory, and yearn for the world peace.
