Professor Smith Lecturing about Energy Exploitation & Environment Reservation in SWPU

On March 25th, Professor Danny Smith visited SWPU, together with his delegation from Environmental Management School of Samford University in U.S. In the morning, Professor Smith, an energy and environment expert, gave a presentation about the environmental problems that the application of drilling and hydraulic fracturing technology has brought in sandstone compaction and shale exploitation. He also had a discussion with teachers and students from Petroleum Engineering School of SWPU in fields, which is about energy exploitation and environment reservation etc.

In his presentation, Professor Smith mentioned that in recent years, energy exploitation is inseparable from environment protection. Under the urgent driving demand of oil and natural gas, hydraulic fracturing or fracking technology has earned great popularity in this business. Meanwhile, it also has become a great threat to environment.

He said, “A rock formation will break if large amounts of water mixed with gravels and chemicals is injected in, and then natural gas and crude oil reserved in the rock formation release from the already drilled wells, which is very convenient to accumulate.” Hydraulic fracturing technology has been widely used in North America. And rapidly increased oil wells and companies have made environmental problems more and more serious, including the bad influence to soil, water and local community.

How to solve this problem? Professor Smith introduced that relevant policies, laws and regulations should be made to guarantee that the innovation and vigor of these companies while they would not be held up, and environmental protection measures and supervision mechanism were well performed. In addition, he also talked about several measures to tackle these environmental problems.

During the seminar in the afternoon, professor smith had an inter-conversation concerning about energy exploitation and environment protection with professors and students in SWPU. Both sides exchanged their ideas on oil and gas pipeline’s influence to environment, upgrading the natural gas line and laws of energy exploitation and environment protection in their own country etc. Hu Junying, a teacher from School of Petroleum Engineering expressed that this seminar inspired him a lot and in the future, he would endeavor to do researches in “green exploitation” by keeping the idea of environmental green and low carbon in mind.
