Zhang Yao Won Second Prize in the National English Speaking Competition

The 18th China Daily 21st Century Coca-Cola Cup of National English Speaking Competition came to an end on March 24th after a grueling three days. The contest was held in the Xiamen People's Hall. Zhang Yao from the School of Politics and Public Administration at GDUFS was awarded second prize with the support of her tutor, Mrs. Zeng Dan.

 
There were 68 students on the final stage. They were required to give their speech on "My View on Social Networking" and then on "The Road Not Taken in Life". In the semifinal, Zhang Yao's gave her speech on the topic "My View on Social Networking". She called for a more sensible treatment of Social Networking by telling the story of how her and her mother made full use of social networks strengthen their relationship. The emotional story touched the audience and secured Zhang's place in the final.

At the final round on March 24th, Zhang Yao gave her prepared speech on "The Road Not Taken in Life" where she shared her views on how to make better choices in life. She did this by exemplifying the life of Hillary Clinton, who didn't give up her political pursuits even in her fifties. In the impromptu speech section, she was asked to give her opinion about the statement, "What a different role will women play if they take the helm". After a short time of preparation, Zhang gave her three-minute speech which was both affectionate and thought-provoking.

After the competition, Zhang expressed her sincere gratitude towards her tutor, Mrs. Zeng Dan. Zhang said:"I gained a lot through every modification of my prepared speech and all the training I was given. It was a stressful experience to compete with these speech-giving experts from Tsinghua University, China Foreign Affairs University and Sichuan International Studies University, but also a fruitful process."
