Delegation from The Netherlands Visits TU

On April 8, 2013, Tianjin University (TU) President Li Jiajun met with a visiting delegation from The Netherlands led by Mr. Ard van der Tuuk, Vice Governor of Drenthe province, and Ms. Yvonne van Mastrigt, Vice Governor of Groningen province. Attendees also included representatives from the Foreign Affairs Office of Tianjin Municipality, as well as the Office of Science and Technology and the Office of International Cooperation from TU.

President Li welcomed the delegation. He briefed the guests on the development, cityscape, and pillar industries of Tianjin, as well as TU’s history, strength in disciplines, and achievements of the past year. He also mentioned that TU attached much importance to in-depth industry-university research collaboration, which would provide research support for economic and social development.

During the meeting, Mr. van der Tuuk and Ms. van Mastrigt presented overviews of their respective provinces, including pillar industries. Both leaders hoped that the visit was a start of collaborative ties and would lay a solid foundation for future cooperation in science and technology as well as education. A discussion was held on staff exchange and joint research in the area of energy, and a consensus was reached to further deepen cooperation.

After the meeting, the delegation observed TU’s classroom teaching. They visited the Key Laboratory of the Ministry of Education for Optoelectronic Information Science and Technology at the School of Precision Instrument and Optoelectronics Engineering, the Key Laboratory of the Ministry of Education for Smart Grid at the School of Electrical Engineering and Automation, and they also interacted with researchers from the laboratories about their research.

The Drenthe and Groningen provinces are located in the north of The Netherlands. The two provinces work closely with each other. Groningen province attaches much importance to the development of energy. In September, 1985, the city of Groningen (the capital of Groningen province) became a sister city of Tianjin. The two cities have maintained close ties in recent years. Their cooperation has achieved good results in the fields of high-level exchange, cadre training, economy and trade, education, and environmental protection. Currently, cooperation in other fields such as water is under discussion between the two cities. The Drenthe province has unique advantages in sensing technology and biological economy. It hopes to develop cooperation with TU through the sister-city partnership between the cities of Groningen and Tianjin.
