A Meeting on Construction of Professional English Held in GUFS

On the afternoon of April 25th, the Faculty of English Language and Culture (FELC) held a meeting with Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press (FLTRP) on the construction of professional English foundation courses group. The meeting aimed to establish co-operations between the two on the construction of professional English courses as well as other issues considering the new situation. Liu Jianda, Vice-president of GDUFS and Xu Jianzhong, Chief-editor of FLTRP, co-chaired the meeting.

Mr. Liu, starting from the historical evolution of CECL teaching materials, proposed that the construction of professional English basic courses group should be centered on the CECL courses, combining such basic courses as listening, phonetics, reading and writing of English. And he hoped that a digital mobile teaching platform could also be constructed so as to facilitate the self-studying of this course. He suggested that through various modern technical skills, such as formative evaluation, this platform could manage to reform the teaching content, teaching skills and teaching methods etc.
 
Wen Binli, Dean of the department, held that the communicative language teaching method had achieved a great success in personnel training. He also expressed his willingness to share the experiences with other universities. He hoped that more universities in our country could use this teaching method in the English teaching practices.
 
Mr. Xu held that the Communicative Approach had achieved a great success thanks to the efforts spared by the generations of people in the department, among which, he added that the course construction centered on the CECL teaching materials and the personnel training mode is mature. And he hoped that with the turning-point of textbook revision, the teaching mode of the FELC could become the mode of GDUFS and become widespread nationwide.

The two parties agreed on the facilities of this project. They also had a heat discussion on the specific implements of this project and had achieved a phased result. Both parties were satisfied with this meeting and hoped that this meeting could become a milestone event of the cooperation issue between them.
