Confucius Institute at the University of Pittsburgh Hosts Year of Monkey Celebrations

On February 6th, a series of celebration activities titled 2016 The Year of Monkey were co-hosted by University of Pittsburgh (CI-Pitt) and CSSA of the University of Pittsburgh, including Chinese culture Tea House, New Year’s Eve dinner and the Spring Festival Evening Gala of the year of Monkey. The Event lasted for 7 hours while attracting nearly a thousand local Americans and Chinese oversea to participate.

In the afternoon, teacher volunteers of CI-Pitt displayed various kinds of traditional Chinese arts such as paper-cutting, tea ceremony, Calligraphy and classical hairstyle designing. An American student who is studying Chinese rushed into Calligraphy exhibition stand. He explained that he is very interested in Chinese culture especially Calligraphy and wrote down his Chinese name “Jie Sen” with Chinese writing brush immediately after one of the volunteer teachers showed him how to do it. Jie Sen told us that he felt so excited to actually take part in celebration activities of Chinese New Year after watching them on TV. Everyone was amazed at the extensive and profound Chinese culture, laughing and enjoying the New Year celebration. Directors of CI-Pitt Ms. Michelle Heryford and Chinese Co-director Ying Xiao had cordial talks with some of the guests and wished everyone a Happy New Year.

From 5pm to 7pm, all the guests including little kids, elderly with gray hair, oversea Chinese and local Americans who are interested in Chinese culture had the New Year’s Eve dinner together. All the people enjoyed delicious dishes in groups sitting around round red tables which symbolize family reunion in traditional Chinese Culture.

The Spring Festival Evening Gala of the year of Monkey officially opened in the 7th floor of the Alumni Hall of the University of Pittsburgh at half past seven that night. All seats of the two-story lobby which could accommodate thousands of people were occupied. The hanging red lanterns, all kinds of paper-cutting decorations and the CCTV Spring Festival Evening Gala all contributed to the Spring Festival’s atmosphere. The audience singed along with the performers when members of the Choir of the Chinese school of Pittsburgh performed two popular Chinese songs, the Yellow River Cantata and The Great Sea, My sweet Home. The show Golden Monkeys, performed by the students of the Chinese Martial Arts School of Pittsburgh, pushed the Gala to its climax. The audiences were all touched by and enjoyed all parts of the three-hour Spring Festival Evening Gala, including wonderful dances and songs, short acts, interesting interactive games as well as the carefully prepared red packets.
